Located in the north-west of Milan the exposition site occupies an area of 110 hectares and held the Expo 2015 fair between May 1 and October 31, 2015. It is organised on two perpendicular axes, the Decumano (World Avenue) and the Cardo in accordance with the Ancient Rome urban planning principles.

Pavilion Zero represents the south-west entrance door to the site and an introduction to the exhibition theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. The building, with a rectangular plan of 9000 square meters, looks like a portion of the Earth’s crust which has been cut and raised. The volume, moduled in eight cones of different sizes, evoke a natural landscape of hills. An external wall divides the cones, while the roof follows contour lines, thus highlighting the pavilion large steps. Pavilion zero is a temporary structure, designed to be disassembled at the end of the event and reused.
